Chemex Classic 3-cup – Handbrewing at its most beautiful

This little gem is for those who enjoy simplicity, aesthetics – and the perfect coffee brew. The Chemex 3-cup is a classic in a smaller format, with the characteristic wooden collar and leather cord, which adds both warmth and style to your coffee time.

Together with the extra thick Chemex filters, you brew a coffee that is clean, smooth and often more fruity in taste. A brewer that never disappoints – whether it's the first cup of the morning or a quiet moment during the day.

Your Chemex checklist

To get started with your 3-cup Chemex, you will need:

  • Your Chemex

  • Crescent shaped Chemex filters

  • A good grinder

  • Digital scale

  • Hours

Basic recipe

  • 25–28 g coffee (medium/coarse grind)

  • 390 g water at 94–96°C

  • Brewing time: about 4 minutes

How to brew

  1. Rinse the filter with hot water – this will also preheat the glass. Pour out the rinse water.

  2. Grind the coffee, put it in the filter, shake lightly and reset the scale.

  3. Start the timer and pour 100g of water in circles – take about 15 seconds.

  4. At 1 minute: pour up to 200 g.

  5. At 2 minutes: pour up to 300 g.

  6. At 3 minutes: pour up to 390 g.

  7. When the water has run through (approx. 4 min), remove the filter – and enjoy.

Brewing tips

  • Make sure the triple side of the filter is facing the pouring spout.

  • After rinsing, check that the filter is tight without air pockets.

  • Direct your tilt towards dark spots in the coffee bed to ensure even saturation.

  • Does the coffee taste bitter or too strong? Try a coarser grind. Is it too weak or acidic? Go finer.

  • Experiment – there are no rules in good coffee, only taste.
