How to Brew Perfect Coffee with a V60?

V60 is one of the most iconic methods of brewing coffee today. It is loved by coffee enthusiasts worldwide for its ability to produce a clean, complex and aromatic cup of coffee. The method can seem a bit intimidating to beginners, but with the right approach and a little practice, it is easy to master. Here is a guide on how to brew the perfect cup of V60 coffee.

What is a V60?

The V60 is a hand-held coffee maker invented by the Japanese company Hario. It is made in a conical design with grooves on the inside that promote even extraction of the coffee. The name "V60" comes from its 60-degree angle, which is an important part of its unique design.

The Equipment You Will Need

To brew with a V60 you will need the following:

  • A Hario V60 coffee maker

  • A paper filter (suitable for your V60 size)

  • Freshly ground coffee (preferably medium to medium)

  • A digital scale

  • A gooseneck jug

  • Fresh, filtered water

  • A temperature-controlled kettle (or a thermometer)

  • A serving jug or cup

The brewing process

1. Preparation

Before you start, make sure all your equipment is clean and ready. Place the V60 brewer on top of your serving pitcher or cup and place the paper filter in the brewer. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any papery taste and preheat the brewer and pitcher. Pour out the rinse water before you start.

2. Grind the Coffee

Grind your coffee to a medium-fine grind – slightly finer than coarse sea salt. A good rule of thumb is to use 60 grams of coffee per liter of water. For a single cup (about 250 ml of water), you will need about 15 grams of coffee.

3. Boil and Cool the Water

Heat the water to a temperature between 90-96 degrees Celsius. If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, you can let the water stand for about 30 seconds after boiling to reach the right temperature.

4. Blooming

Pour a small amount of water (about twice the weight of the coffee) over the ground coffee beans. This is called "blooming" and helps release the CO2 from the coffee. Wait 30-45 seconds before continuing.

5. Hand tilt

Pour the rest of the water slowly and evenly in circular motions, starting from the center and working outwards. Try to avoid hitting the paper filter directly. Pour in several batches so that the entire brewing process takes between 2:30 and 3:30 minutes.

6. Finish Brewing

Once all the water has drained, remove the V60 brewer and discard the paper filter with the coffee grounds. Gently stir the coffee in the serving jug to mix it evenly.

Tips for Perfection

  • Fresh coffee: Always use freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee beans for the best taste.

  • Experiment: Adjust your grind size, brew time, and water temperature to find your perfect balance.

  • Weigh everything: Precision is the key to a consistent cup.

With this guide, you're ready to explore the art of V60 brewing. Enjoy the unique experience and wonderful taste that this method offers. Cheers to coffee!
